About This Service
Assess the Firebox Material
The material exposed to the fire should be identified before a repair is specified. Masonry firebrick, mortar joints and manufactured refractory panels are different components with different repair decisions.
Twin discusses what is damaged and whether repair or a compatible replacement is appropriate. General-purpose filler is not a substitute for identifying the installed fireplace and the material being repaired.
Identify the Purpose of an Access Opening
An ash cleanout or service opening should not be confused with a broken firebox surface. The location and construction determine the purpose of an opening and its intended closure.
Describe missing or damaged covers without reaching inside. The repair should specify the component and preserve any access the installed system requires.
Assess an Opening That Was Closed Off
A cover over an old fireplace does not establish what remains behind it. The system may have been altered or left incomplete before the opening was concealed.
Describe the known history and intended future use. Agree the assessment and access plan before removing finishes or assuming the fireplace can return to operation.
Return to the Fireplace Only After an Incident Assessment
A fire being extinguished or an alarm stopping does not establish that the fireplace is ready to use. Follow emergency responders’ instructions and leave the system unused pending the appropriate assessment.
Keep the incident details and any written findings available. Repair planning should distinguish observed damage, inaccessible areas and conditions that still prevent reuse.
Review an Earlier Unidentified Replacement
A replacement panel, door or fitting may look appropriate without belonging to the installed fireplace. Mention any component whose origin or model compatibility is uncertain.
Invoices and packaging can help identify it. The proposed work should explain whether compatibility is established or whether further identification is needed before reuse or another order.
