About This Service
Assess the Firebox Material
The material exposed to the fire should be identified before a repair is specified. Masonry firebrick, mortar joints and manufactured refractory panels are different components with different repair decisions.
Twin discusses what is damaged and whether repair or a compatible replacement is appropriate. General-purpose filler is not a substitute for identifying the installed fireplace and the material being repaired.
Investigate a Damper That Will Not Move
A sticking damper or an uncertain operating position should be described during booking. It may involve the plate, linkage, surrounding material or another condition that cannot be identified from the handle alone.
Do not force a mechanism or alter it before the visit. The proposed repair should identify the affected component and distinguish it from work elsewhere in the venting system.
Separate Past Water Damage From Continuing Entry
A stained interior can remain after a leak has been corrected, while new dampness can suggest an unresolved concern. Explain whether the area is changing or simply still marked.
The proposal should distinguish restoration of damaged fireplace material from any further investigation of water entry. Ask which part of that work is included.
Include a Damaged Outside-Air Control
Some fireplaces have a separate outside-air inlet and control. Damage there is different from a stuck chimney damper, even if both problems are described as a handle that will not move.
Tell Twin which control is affected. The assessment should identify its purpose before recommending a repair or closing an unfamiliar opening.
Describe Both Sides of a See-Through Fireplace
A see-through fireplace is one appliance with more than one viewing side. Tell Twin which side has the damaged component and whether access is available from both rooms.
Changes to one face must respect the complete installation. An indoor see-through model should not be treated as an indoor-outdoor unit without the appropriate product approval.
