About This Service
Assess Deteriorated Metal as a Whole
Rust and screen damage should be assessed together with the cap body and attachment. The visible defect may not show the full deterioration. Discuss repair versus replacement, the supplied material and its maintenance information without assuming that replacing one damaged piece corrects the entire fitting.
Set Expectations for the Finished Appearance
A new cap may differ in color or profile from an older weathered fitting. Discuss the desired appearance before selection, while keeping product suitability first. Exact visual matching should not be promised where the old fitting is unidentified or no longer available.
Describe Rain Symptoms Independently
Water visible inside the fireplace and a damaged lid may occur together without proving one complete cause. Keep both observations in the service request. A cap proposal should state what its replacement addresses and whether a separate water-entry investigation is still needed.
Confirm What Custom Fabrication Includes
A custom cover still needs a defined fit and application. Ask which openings, attachment and supporting conditions its specification addresses. The fact that a piece is fabricated to measurements does not automatically establish that it is appropriate for the connected chimney system.
Separate Weather Protection From Readiness to Use
Replacing a missing cap may protect an appropriate outlet, but it does not establish the condition of the passage or fireplace below. If the system has been unused or its maintenance history is unknown, raise that separate question before planning the next fire.
